Fishing and fish processing

Nowadays 10-12 boats ranging from 6-12 tonnes put out from Borgarfjörður,  fishing almost exclusively in local fishing grounds, using mostly environmentally friendly hook fishing. The annual quota has remained stable in the last decade, since hardly any quota has been sold to other parts of Iceland, and corresponding amounts have been bought to replace what was sold. Nearly all of the quota is caught by local boats, with very little being leased away. Moreover, almost all of the catch is processed in Borgarfjörður.
