Birdwatching

When crossing the plain by Héraðsflói bay, on the way from Egilsstaðir to

Borgarfjörður, you can sight numerous bird species on the ponds just beside the road, while in Borgarfjörður itself there is a bird-watching hide right in the village, below the general store. The best time for viewing birdlife is in May and June, though many birds can be seen throughout the summer. Kittiwakes can usually be seen flocking to bathe by and on the river Fjarðará. By the boat harbour at

Hafnarhólmi, on the fjord's east coast, platforms have been built for viewing the birds and scenery. Many puffins nest there, along with a number of eider ducks and some kittiwakes and fulmars. The eiders are most conspicuous in early June, while the drakes are still at the nesting grounds. Puffins keep returning to their holes till early August, kittiwakes and fulmars till late August. In June and July, the puffin platform is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is always open in August but closed in May so the birds can prepare for nesting. Hafnarbjarg, east of Borgarfjörður, is a lively bird cliff, and some guillemots (murre) and razorbills have also recently started to nest there. The only approach is by boat.
