Steller’s Eider

Steller’s Eider

E-mail Print PDF

In recent years a drake Steller’s Eider (Polysticta stelleri) has taken up residence at Borgarfjörður eystri and it can often be seen near the bird hide in the village. Steller’s Eider is a rare vagrant to Iceland and does not breed here. Nevertheless a drake was once paired to a female Common Eider at a colony at Örlygshöfn in western Iceland several years ago. The Steller’s Eider at Borgarfjörður associates with Harlequin Ducks (Histrionicus histrionicus) and vagrants elsewhere are usually seen with Harlequins or Common Eider.

Steller’s Eiders are Arctic birds which breed along the Arctic coast of Russia and Alaska. They winter around the Bering Sea, northern Scandinavia and in the Baltic Sea.
